Cervical Spine (Neck) with Contrast MRI Scan

What is a Cervical Spine MRI with Contrast?

A cervical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan is used to form a detailed picture of your spine in the neck area. This section of the spine is made up of seven vertebrae and eight pairs of spinal nerves.

This is a non-invasive imaging procedure that uses a magnetic field and radio waves. Unlike procedures that use radiation, MRI is a safe and effective alternative.

Sometimes an MRI is performed after administration of a contrast material. The contrast is given intravenously before or during the procedure. Its purpose is to add information to the pictures.

Are There Any Risks to Cervical MRIs?

Since there is no radiation, the procedure is very safe. The contrast that is used is also safe. Allergies can occur – but this is uncommon. The technologist who operates the MRI scanner will monitor your well-being carefully during the procedure to ensure your safety.

If you have any metallic implants in your body, an MRI can exert a mild force on them. This not generally detectable, however you will be asked before the procedure if you have any metallic implants. Cardiac pacemakers and metallic objects around the eye in particular can pose a problem for MRI.
