What is an Elbow MRI?

An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan generates images of the body by manipulating magnetic fields and radio waves. MRI scans can be performed for many body parts, including but not limited to the cervical spine, the ankle, and the pelvis. An elbow MRI produces detailed pictures of the elbow’s bones (humerus, radius and ulna), joints (humero-ulnar joint, humeroradial joint and proximal radioulnar joint), and soft tissues (ligaments, tendons, and muscles).
What is the purpose of an Elbow MRI?

There are a number of reasons why your doctor might request an MRI scan of the elbow, as it can help detect and diagnose:

  • Abnormal thickening of the tendon

  • Tendon degeneration

  • Elbow instability

  • Inflammation and fluid accumulation

  • Fractures and dislocations

  • Sports injuries such as Tennis elbow and Golfer’s elbow
